Elementary School Director with Focus on Results and Equity

Do you want to lead the development of approximately 70 operations and shape the future of education in one of Sweden's most expansive municipalities? Your Responsibilities In this role, you will be the direct manager of ten people – a well-structured team consisting of five specialized employees and five managers, four of whom are area directors. You will lead and develop the department through close, trust-based, and strategic collaboration with your area directors, who in turn lead and support our principals in the field. Together, a total of 120 managers and approximately 2,800 employees work for our students, currently numbering around 16,200. Your mission involves translating national reforms and political objectives into concrete, successful school development at the classroom level. A particular focus lies on accelerating work to improve academic results and increase equity across our schools. You are expected to lead at a high pace in change initiatives, analyze the effects of our investments, and quickly navigate based on shifting demographic and economic conditions. Your Main Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership and Governance: Lead, unite, and develop the elementary school department's organization toward established goals. Results and Follow-up: Drive systematic quality work with a strong focus on demonstrating and improving the effectiveness of our pedagogical and economic investments. Create stable conditions and work peace for principals and teachers by prioritizing, protecting core mission, and balancing demands and expectations. Labor Relations: Collaborate with and maintain constructive dialogue with labor representatives. Media and National Focus: Represent the elementary school in media contexts and actively market Linköping's schools on the national stage through networking and collaboration. Your Workplace Because our current elementary school director is concluding their working life and retiring after 10 years in the role, it is time to pass this important responsibility to the next person ready to take it on. Your physical base will be at the education office in central Linköping, but your mission spans the entire municipality's geographic area and includes approximately 70 operations within the elementary school department. The elementary school department is characterized by a self-driven, positive, and professional group of area directors and principals who value participation and strong shared ownership of school development issues. About You We are looking for someone who has: Pedagogical higher education with a degree as an elementary school teacher or after-school program teacher, or alternatively another education that the employer deems equivalent. Experience working as a principal in elementary school. Experience in a management role with personnel, budget, and operational responsibility. Solid knowledge of elementary school's national governing documents, education law, and ongoing reforms. Very strong ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish, as the role involves extensive reporting to political bodies and committees as well as external communication. We consider the following as merits: experience leading other managers, for example as an area director, school director, or equivalent at the principal level; experience successfully driving digitalization, AI applications, and system development within school operations. We would appreciate strong experience with media management and understanding of the modern media landscape and social media's impact. To succeed and have legitimacy in this highly strategic role, you must have a stable foundation in the profession and substantial experience with school operations. You need good self-awareness, feel comfortable in interpersonal interactions, and possess personal confidence that allows you to stand firm even during periods of rapid change and complex situations. You are confident in your leadership with a clear view of the whole, which is an absolute prerequisite because you operate in a large, politically governed organization where your decisions directly affect 68 schools with entirely different needs. You understand your role in the municipal governance chain and have a pronounced ability to place the elementary school's mission in a broader context – you look to the best interests of both the entire education department and Linköping Municipality in both actions and decisions. This means you can translate complex societal issues, demographic changes, and political directives into strategic priorities that create long-term value and increased equity for all students in Linköping. With excellent judgment, you make well-considered decisions, balance local interests against departmental goals, and handle difficult trade-offs with high personal integrity and professionalism. Because elementary school faces major demographic changes, economic restructuring, and intensive national reforms, it is crucial that you are highly flexible and change-oriented. You have a natural ability to quickly adapt your leadership and strategies to changed circumstances and can easily shift perspectives when conditions require it. You have good judgment, make well-considered decisions even in pressured situations, and handle difficult matters with high integrity and professionalism. You are a confident and stable leader who builds trust and engagement while daring to make decisions and stand by them. Your problem-solving analytical skills allow you to quickly identify patterns and propose sustainable solutions to challenging problems.
