Do you want to work for society as a whole and contribute to sustainable interaction between people and water in Sweden? What unites us who work at SMHI is our desire to contribute to positive societal development. This can apply to both small and large decisions. From how cities should be built to be safe in a hundred years to tomorrow's weather forecast. Our knowledgeable and engaged employees are our strength. We have various types of expertise, from meteorologists, hydrologists, oceanographers, and air quality researchers to IT experts and behavioral scientists. The Department of Societal Planning works with SMHI's mission to develop decision-support materials that contribute to good societal planning, to reduce vulnerability in society, and to help achieve national environmental quality objectives. These materials are extensively used in society's climate adaptation efforts. The work also includes sharing knowledge about Sweden's meteorological, hydrological, oceanographic, and climatological conditions. Within the Water Unit, the focus is on developing decision-support materials to create societal benefits with an emphasis on hydrological and oceanographic services. Deliverables include materials for Sweden's management of shared water resources, knowledge-enhancing information about hydrology and oceanography, data stewardship, and specific investigations or analyses for individual actors such as municipalities, businesses, and other authorities. The Hydrology Group is an important expert function in hydrology and GIS operations, working within water management and budget activities with hydrological expert investigations, handling consultations in the hydrology field, and producing information regarding hydrology and climate for SMHI's website. The group is responsible for base production of processed data, the Swedish Water Archive (SVAR), and collaborates closely with Water Authorities and the Land Survey Agency (Lantmäteriet). We are now seeking a GIS Developer for this group. About the Position In the role of GIS Developer, you will primarily work on developing methods and procedures for hydrological GIS materials and creating and publishing GIS products. The work is conducted together with other GIS experts in the group and from the rest of SMHI. Not everyone has the same skills, but most are typically experts in their field. We see ourselves as knowledge resources for one another, and we hope you can contribute new expertise to our operations. The results of our work are used at SMHI as input for research and forecast production but also by other authorities, educational institutions, and external companies. The products developed are fundamental information for others' decisions, which means that documentation of methods, code, materials, and results is ongoing. About You We are looking for you with relevant higher education and strong knowledge of geographic information systems. It is a merit if you also have knowledge in Geoscience/Hydrology. You have several years of professional experience with automated production processes for GIS products. It is a merit if you have previous work in water management and if you are well familiar with GIS standards (for example INSPIRE, GML, Swedish water standard, geopackage). It is also a merit if you have knowledge of the Swedish Water Archive (SVAR) and the Land Survey Agency's Hydrographic Products. You have worked with geographic data in FME and QGIS and have handled both source materials and produced results in PostgreSQL. Since the work can be facilitated by custom code, it is a merit if you have programming experience, particularly in Python. The work involves materials for all of Sweden, and we see potential for developing methods based on AI/ML, so if you have experience in that field, that is also a merit. Since the position involves significant collaboration with others, you must work well with people and have the ability to create and maintain good relationships. As a person, you are structured and plan, organize, and prioritize work efficiently. You are also thorough and well aware of objectives and quality standards, analyze and break down problems into their components, and solve complicated problems. The position requires good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written. Employment Type This is a permanent position. Work Location Placement is at our office in Norrköping. Application Deadline We welcome your application by August 30, 2026. Learn more about SMHI as a workplace and our offering at https://www.smhi.se/jobba-pa-smhi/smhi-som-arbetsplats.
