About the Role
As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will work at the intersection of St1's operations and technology. You will collaborate directly with business teams to transform real operational challenges into practical AI and software solutions.
This is a role focused on hands-on execution – not a traditional engineering role behind the scenes. You will work closely with teams in retail, energy trading, and refinery operations to identify opportunities, build solutions, and take ideas from prototype stage to measurable business results.
The role suits an engineer with a few years of experience who thrives working quickly, solving ambiguous problems, and collaborating closely with end users. You will work with senior engineers, architects, and platform teams who will support you in building scalable solutions.
Your mission: to help take prioritized use cases from idea to value in weeks – not quarters.
How You Create Impact
You will:
• Work closely with business units and corporate functions to identify, prototype, and deliver solutions from St1's list of use cases.
• Build rapid prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions, validate them with stakeholders, and support informed decisions about further development.
• Drive daily technical delivery while making pragmatic technical choices.
• Use AI-assisted development methods and agent-based approaches to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality, security, and compliance.
• Translate business needs into technical solutions and feed learnings back into St1's technical roadmap.
• Work closely with end users, AI and data teams, software developers, architects, and platform teams.
• Help transform successful pilots into production-ready solutions.
• Ensure solutions comply with St1's requirements for AI governance, data management, security, and compliance.
What You Bring
We're looking for someone who is curious, collaboration-focused, and driven by creating real impact. You likely have:
• A solid technical background with a few years of experience building and delivering software or AI solutions.
• Practical experience in at least one area such as applied AI, cloud platforms, data engineering, or machine learning.
• A strong focus on delivery and the ability to prototype and iterate with non-technical users.
• The ability to translate operational challenges into practical technical solutions.
• Experience with modern development practices: APIs, integrations, version control, testing, deployment, and AI-assisted development tools.
• Fluent English; knowledge of Finnish, Swedish, or Norwegian is a plus.
• Willingness to occasionally travel to St1's facilities in the Nordic region and the United Kingdom.
