University of Gothenburg meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future. The Department of Physics at University of Gothenburg is located in central Gothenburg and has approximately 100 employees. Communication opportunities are good, both nationally and internationally. Research is focused on atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, complex systems, and biophysics, and is conducted in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. Education at the department includes teaching in bachelor's and master's programs in physics, physics in teacher education, and physics courses for the general public. Physics Centre Gothenburg, a close collaboration with three other institutions within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, creates an innovative environment for all department researchers and students. More information about the Department of Physics can be found at http://www.physics.gu.se. Additional information about Gothenburg Physics Centre can be found at https://www.chalmers.se/institutioner/fysik-och-astronomi/samhalle-och-naringsliv/gpc/. Subject Description One of the most successful research areas at the department is spintronics, with a focus on magnetodynamic phenomena, spin/orbital torque, nanofabrication, and the physics of spintronic components. We study these components using magnetic, electrical, and optical methods (specifically microfocused BLS), and model them with GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulations. Johan Åkerman's research group is driving a major project, funded by VR's Research Professorship, where new spintronic components are being developed. In order to advance the BLS division, the department is now seeking a Researcher to help drive this part of the project forward. Main Responsibilities The main responsibilities are the development and application of Brillouin light scattering (BLS) microscopy for advanced materials characterization. The position requires substantial expertise in optical systems and precision measurements. It also requires experience with CW and femtosecond lasers, including design and construction of optical setups as well as alignment of these. Knowledge of pump-probe spectroscopy is a merit. You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of BLS microscopy systems, including femtosecond comb-driven experimental setups. You will also perform BLS measurements on spintronic nanocomponents and a variety of other material systems, and analyze the results. The position involves a central role in research on cutting-edge optical microscopy techniques for materials and component characterization. You will work together with doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, and advance the research by contributing to both the design and analysis of experiments. You are expected to write scientific articles based on your results and also contribute to others' scientific articles. You are also expected to present your results at scientific conferences. Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a researcher, you must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Assessment Criteria We are looking for someone who has demonstrated significant scientific expertise in the fields of optical systems, optical spectroscopy, and optical microscopy methods. It is a merit to have expertise in Brillouin light scattering (BLS) or Raman microscopy, femtosecond frequency combs, and excitation and detection of acoustic waves and spin waves. Scientific expertise is assessed mainly based on peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals and presentations at international conferences. Employment Type of employment: Fixed-term employment for 6 months Scope: 100% Location: Department of Physics, Gothenburg Start date: October 5, 2026 Application Process Register your application electronically. Your application should include: A personal letter explaining why you are applying for the position. CV including scientific publications. Copy of your degree certificate. Two personal references (name, phone number, relationship). Contact Information for the Position If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to contact Johan Åkerman, Professor, [email protected].
