Description The Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF) is a multidisciplinary research institute that is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University and conducts research focused on housing, built environment, and urban issues in a broad sense. Climate and environment-related urban transition is one of several research fields. The Institute's staff comprises approximately 50 people, many of whom are researchers and doctoral students. Research disciplines at IBF include economic history, cultural geography, environmental psychology, economics, sociology, and political science. Duties This position is part of the Science Council-funded research program Residential Segregation, Urbanization and Unequal Life Chances. The program is led by Professor Matz Dahlberg and aims to increase understanding of the historical processes that have shaped residential segregation in Sweden today and its consequences for people's living conditions. A central part of the program is building a longitudinal database with geographically detailed individual-level data covering Sweden's entire population from 1950 to today. By combining historical census records, address information, and modern registers, unique opportunities are created to analyze the emergence, development, and effects of segregation over time. The work includes conducting independent research in collaboration with the project leader and other researchers within the program's scope and research questions. The researcher will primarily work with geocoding information from censuses from 1950 onwards at a fine geographical level, linking historical census data to each other and to modern register data, database management, and preparing research materials for further analysis. The work also includes developing and managing geographic databases, conducting spatial analyses, and participating in scientific publications within the program's research areas. Qualifications For employment as a researcher, you must have a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, in history, economics, or another subject that the employer deems relevant to the position's content. The applicant must also have: documented experience with programmatic geocoding of Swedish historical geodata documented experience organizing and managing large population and address databases documented experience working with spatial relational databases, such as PostGIS, and spatial SQL documented experience with spatial analysis and visualization using GIS tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or R Desirable/Meriting Qualifications The work requires the ability to work independently, carefully, and systematically with large datasets and complex databases. Considerable weight will be placed on analytical ability, collaboration skills, and the ability to contribute to the research program's long-term data infrastructure.
