The Department of Culture and Aesthetics is a large and dynamic department within the Faculty of Humanities with approximately 120 employees, about fifty of whom are doctoral students in five disciplines. Theater Studies at Stockholm University is part of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics alongside the disciplines of history of ideas, art history, literature studies, musicology, cultural heritage studies, and curating. The department offers a four-year doctoral program in theater studies. The discipline, which also encompasses dance studies and performance studies, has existed at Stockholm University since 1946 and is an active and internationally oriented research environment. Our researchers approach various forms of performing arts as events, understood within their specific social, historical, and cultural contexts. Our research is based on an expanded concept of performing arts that includes spoken theater, musicals, opera, ballet, contemporary dance, performance art, cultural productions, etc. More information about us can be found at: Department of Culture and Aesthetics. The position is financed by the Anders Sandrew Foundation. Project Description The Anders Sandrew Foundation supports research in film and theater studies through donations to film and theater studies at Stockholm University. The foundation finances two researcher positions, one in film studies and one in theater studies. The Sandrew researchers will be part of the departments' research environments, but will also have joint research activities across disciplinary boundaries. The research project described by the applicant in the research plan should be adapted to the employment period (half-time for one year), and thus constitute a smaller project or a sub-study/beginning/conclusion of a larger project. It may advantageously be a theater studies project where theater is viewed in relation to other art and creative forms, such as film, music, scenography, or costume. The project may also be directed toward children's and youth culture. The research plan will be evaluated based on scientific quality and feasibility according to the assessment criteria below. Duties The primary duty is to conduct theater studies research. Some teaching (up to 20% of full-time) may be included in the position. Furthermore, the researcher is expected to participate actively in the department's activities. Qualification Requirements A researcher is employed primarily for research and must have completed a doctoral degree or hold a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Assessment Criteria In the appointment, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence and the quality of the project description. Applicants from the entire humanities field may be considered if the project is in theater studies. As a general qualification requirement, applicants must have both the ability to collaborate and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform the work duties well. An artistic doctoral degree does not confer qualification. The degree must be completed by the final application deadline 2026-11-02. The applicant must be proficient in Swedish, i.e., read and understand Swedish. About the Position The position is 50% of full-time and is time-limited for 12 months. Start date 2027-01-18 or by agreement. What We Offer With us, you get the dynamic interplay between higher education and research that makes Stockholm University an exciting and creative environment.
