The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education related to the atmosphere, ocean, and physics-based climate science. MISU offers educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and ocean that are relevant to weather and climate. We strive for a broad research activity within our scientific field. We study questions that range from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere and from the tropics to the poles. In our research, we utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Furthermore, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments. MISU has approximately 60 employees and is part of a larger research environment that includes the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department has a strong international character, with more than half of the staff having backgrounds outside Sweden, and both Swedish and English are used as working languages. We welcome and value diversity in our workplace. Please visit the Department of Meteorology's website for more information about us. Project Description Aerosol particles in the atmosphere play an important role in cloud formation and in Earth's radiation balance. In this project, linked to the EU project CERTAINTY, we study how the interaction between aerosol particles and clouds is expressed in changes in precipitation patterns as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation. We will primarily use high-resolution simulations in the project. Responsibilities In this project, you will conduct research on the role of aerosol particles in precipitation patterns and extreme precipitation, primarily through analysis of global high-resolution simulations using the ICON climate model, but the research may also include analysis of observations and other models. Qualification Requirements A researcher is employed primarily for research and must have completed a doctorate or hold a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctorate. Evaluation Criteria The doctorate must be completed in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made. In the selection process, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific expertise in the area of employment. Applicants are also expected to have excellent verbal and written skills in English. About the Position The position is full-time and limited to a maximum of 12 months.
