About the job The aviation medical team within the civil aviation certification section reviews and assesses medical certificates for pilots, air traffic controllers and cabin crew, oversees certified aviation medical examiners and aviation medical centers, and participates in regulatory development within the aviation medical field both nationally and internationally. The role of aviation medical examiner is described in the European regulations for civil aviation and involves being a medical expert in aviation medicine and supporting aviation medical examiners in their work. For all serious medical problems affecting pilots or air traffic controllers, you will be consulted and in most cases make decisions on appropriate investigations and approve fitness when possible. You work in a team closely with medical case handlers and experienced aviation medical examiners. The aviation medical team has access to several independent medical experts who assist with assessments within their respective fields. In the area of heart disease, you meet regularly each month. It is always you as aviation medical examiner who makes an overall risk assessment and makes the decision. There are excellent opportunities for mentoring and growing into the role. Assessment of individual aviation medical cases alternates with inspection visits to aviation medical examiners' practices and aviation medical centers. Read more about what it's like to work at Transportstyrelsen You will review and assess aviation medical cases communicate and advise aviation medical examiners plan and conduct oversight and competency assessments of aviation medical examiners and aviation medical centers plan and conduct information and training initiatives in aviation medicine both internally and externally plan and conduct annual aviation medical examiner seminars handle appeals and objections in consultation with the agency's legal team cooperate with other agencies nationally and internationally. You must have Swedish medical license have specialist certification in a clinical specialty (not laboratory) and at least two years of experience in the same field, or alternatively have held an aviation medical certificate class 1 or 3 demonstrate substantial experience in aviation medical work have good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in both Swedish and English. It is meritorious if you also have experience assessing medical cases without having met the person in person documented experience teaching and giving presentations any type of aviation training.
