MAX IV's electronics team, within the Technical Division, is seeking engaged individuals who want to contribute to the development of the facility. About UsThe electronics team is a diverse group of 12 people with varying backgrounds, dedicated to the electronics in our advanced facility. We work with a broad spectrum of electronics and related technical aspects. OpportunityMAX IV currently operates 16 beamlines and three accelerators, and with an increasing pace of maintenance, we need to strengthen the electronics workshop. The role involves building and repairing electronics and continuously assisting researchers and staff with the electronics needed to conduct experiments and keep the facility operational. Key ResponsibilitiesAs a team member, you will work with various tools and techniques and collaborate with many different groups. Throughout, you are required to provide a high level of service and be meticulous in your work. Common tasks include manufacturing and repairing cables such as BNC, DSUB, SMA, LEMO, etc. The work also includes repairing electronic equipment through troubleshooting and component replacement. You will build electronics either on lab benches placed in aluminum enclosures or develop specifications so the team can create a PCB, or design the PCB yourself. In the laboratory, you will primarily work with small and noise-sensitive signals, but also with high voltages and currents. A large portion of the electronics has embedded systems, so experience programming and configuring Raspberry Pi or Arduino, microprocessors such as ESP32, or other devices that can be connected via ethernet or wlan is valuable. Some electronics have fast signals that need to be examined with an oscilloscope/signal generator/spectrum analyzer. Knowledge of noise and how to build highly stable power supplies is therefore advantageous for the position. Service to researchers is an important part of the work. Repairs often need to be performed on short notice so experiments can continue without unnecessary interruptions, even in situations where documentation or manuals are lacking. The role also requires the ability to translate needs into technical solutions. The researchers who need support do not always have deep knowledge of electronics and may therefore have difficulty formulating a complete specification. It will be your task to figure out what they actually want instead of building what they ask for. QualificationsTo succeed in this role, you need: A relevant degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or physics. Experience building and repairing analog and/or digital electronics. Experience with oscilloscopes and other measuring instruments. Experience with embedded systems. Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written. Excellent service skills, ability to collaborate, and practical aptitude. MeritsThe following will be considered as additional merits: Hardware and electronics: small signal measurement, motion control/motors, troubleshooting with test equipment, knowledge of electrical components. PCB design. Experience with RF signals. Software: general Linux knowledge, Python, PCB manufacturing using e.g. Altium. Previous experience working at a research-focused facility in an electronics-related position. Strong language skills, particularly in English.
