Job Duties The Department of Building Technology, Energy Systems and Environmental Science at University of Gävle is seeking a PhD candidate to conduct scientific research on sustainable concrete for construction. In Sweden today, the construction industry accounts for a very large portion of energy consumption. Energy is used in three phases during a building's lifetime: the construction phase, the use phase, and the end-of-life phase. The overall objective of the project is to improve the competitive advantages of sustainable concrete through technical methods and reduced carbon dioxide emissions during the lifecycle, thereby contributing to a greener and more sustainable society. Research Education Subject: Energy Systems Project Description The project will focus on construction and environmental aspects of sustainable concrete. The research will be conducted through experimental and analytical studies. The PhD candidate is expected to write a doctoral dissertation equivalent to 180 higher education credits and publish high-quality articles in international journals. The total duration of the doctoral position is five years, with 20% of the time allocated to teaching. The doctoral position includes: carrying out the scientific project completing courses equivalent to at least 60 credits teaching and carrying out administrative work regularly participating in academic activities such as seminars and meetings The job duties include some teaching in courses at basic and advanced levels. Some administrative tasks may also occur. The employment is full-time for up to five years and the workplace is Gävle. Qualifications To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, § 35). General eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the advanced level, or who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in or outside the country in another way. Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in Energy Systems (the research education subject) is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level in energy systems, building technology, or another field that the employer considers equivalent. Eligibility is also held by those who have another degree at the advanced level with at least 60 credits in a relevant area for the doctoral education. To succeed in your doctoral studies at University of Gävle, we want you to have the ability to: be goal-oriented in your work, independently drive your work forward, be able to collaborate with others, have a professional approach, analyze and work with complex issues, be able to discuss and explain research to people not working within your own field. Furthermore, it is a requirement that you have good ability to express yourself in both Swedish and English, both orally and in writing. For the position, it is meritorious if you have experience with laboratory work, analytical methods, and writing scientific publications. Admission and Assessment Criteria To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must be assessed to have the ability to benefit from the education (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, § 35). Admission is made after individual assessment. The employment is a limited-term full-time position (first one year, which can then be extended by a maximum of two years at a time). The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral-level education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain work tasks such as teaching and administration.
