The Department of Zoology is one of the departments at the Faculty of Science and has approximately 80 employees, including researchers, PhD students, and administrative staff. Research and education at the department take place in an international environment and focus on animal biology. Research Education Subject We are seeking a PhD student for a four-year research project under the supervision of professor Emily Baird. The overall objective is to explore how temperature changes in agricultural landscapes affect bumblebee behavior and pollination capacity in changing environments. The project combines behavioral ecology, thermal biology, and pollination research to study how bumblebees respond to different temperature changes and how these changes may ultimately affect yields and production in agriculture. Using behavioral analysis and thermal imaging technology, we will investigate both individual and colony-level responses to temperature. A broad range of experiments will be conducted under different thermal conditions in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field. The project also includes morphological and physiological analyses to map bumblebee thermal properties and increase understanding of individual variation in temperature tolerance and behavioral responses. By combining these methods, the project aims to provide new knowledge about how altered temperature conditions can affect pollinator function and pollination services in agriculture. The work is conducted in close collaboration with an agricultural upper secondary school in Södermanland, which provides opportunities for collaboration and knowledge dissemination outside academia. The PhD student will have a central role in project implementation and will be responsible for coordinating project activities, fieldwork, experimental studies, data analyses, and communicating research results through scientific publications and presentations. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to research education, the applicant must have general and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application deadline. You have general eligibility if you have completed an advanced degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Specific eligibility is described in the general curriculum for research-level education in zoology. To meet specific eligibility requirements, the applicant must have at least 120 higher education credits in biology or a similar subject, and at least 45 higher education credits in independent work within animal behavior or equivalent. Selection Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from research-level education. Criteria used to assess this ability are: documented knowledge and experience of bumblebee behavior analytical and creative thinking own initiative independence collaboration skills ability to express yourself in speech and writing in both Swedish and English. Swedish is important as parts of the research work are conducted in close collaboration with a Swedish agricultural upper secondary school and its students. The ability to understand literature in Swedish is necessary for the project. Admission procedure for research-level education at Stockholm University. About the Position We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time research-level education for four years. As a PhD student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own research-level education, but the position may include work with education, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%). A new position as a PhD student is valid for at most one year, and the position is thereafter renewed for at most two years at a time.
