PhD Student in Partial Differential Equations, Mathematics Center

Popis:

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our mission to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's living conditions. About the Position The position is located at the Mathematics Center, Department of Mathematics. The Mathematics Center is a shared institution for Lund University's Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and Faculty of Science (N) that brings together all mathematical activities. The Department of Mathematics (N) brings together leading experts in areas such as partial differential equations, operator theory and complex analysis, harmonic analysis and applications, inverse problems, differential geometry, computational mathematics, and algebra. We place great emphasis on a good and collegial work environment. The department is international with a relatively balanced gender distribution among staff. Being a PhD Student As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University. As a doctoral researcher, you will be trained in a scientific approach. This can briefly be described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with appropriate methodology, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by a supervisor. Doctoral studies culminate in a dissertation and a PhD degree. For more information about being a PhD student at the Faculty of Science, visit naturvetenskap.se. Research Topic and Project Description The research will focus on nonlinear partial differential equations in fluid mechanics and wave motion. The position is partially funded by the Crafoord Foundation and concerns stationary solutions to Euler's equations with applications to water waves with vorticity. Construction and analysis of such solutions involve methods from nonlinear functional analysis and dynamical systems. The research consists mainly of mathematical analysis, but may include some numerical computations if desired by the candidate. There is also an opportunity to work on related areas such as thin film equations and nonlinear nonlocal dispersive equations with other researchers at the department. Responsibilities The main responsibility of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral research, meaning you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University. As a PhD student, you will be part of a growing research group in an active research environment. In addition to working on the project, you will have the opportunity to participate in seminars and conferences and dedicate some time to doctoral studies. You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which consists mainly of writing a dissertation. Duties may also include teaching and other departmental tasks (maximum 20%). Qualifications To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below. Eligibility Requirements You meet the basic eligibility requirements for doctoral-level education if you have: completed a degree at advanced level, or completed at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level, or acquired knowledge deemed substantially equivalent in another way The specific eligibility requirements for admission to doctoral studies in mathematics are: completed courses in mathematics corresponding to at least 120 university credits, of which 50 credits must be at advanced level (Master's level) the courses at basic and advanced levels must include a degree project corresponding to at least 30 university credits special eligibility may also be obtained through equivalent studies; this is assessed on a case-by-case basis knowledge and skills in mathematical analysis ability to work independently and formulate and handle research problems good written and oral communication skills very good knowledge of English in speech and writing Selection Criteria Selection among eligible applicants will be based on ability to benefit from the education according to the following criteria: preference is given to applicants who completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline knowledge of partial differential equations and functional analysis experience working with models in fluid mechanics is a strong merit Great weight will be placed on how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability required to complete doctoral studies. Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, motivation, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and abilities, is assessed to have the qualifications required to successfully complete doctoral-level education. What We Offer Lund University is a public authority, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation, and a favorable occupational pension. As a PhD student at Lund University, you are both admitted as a student and employed, which provides several benefits. For more information about working at Lund University, visit lu.se.
