The Department of Subject Matter Education has approximately 280 employees. The Division of Science Education includes 26 people, including five professors, eight senior researchers, six university lecturers, and seven PhD students. Research at the division covers all levels of the education system, with a main focus on contributing to teaching development research. The division's researchers use various forms of data generation, such as interviews, classroom observations, surveys, and text analysis. Project Description The dissertation work will be conducted within the framework of doctoral education in science education. The dissertation project is directed toward primary school grades 4–9 and/or upper secondary school, focusing on the significance of teaching for students' interest in science. Interest develops in social contexts, at home and in school, and encompasses cognitive, aesthetic, and normative aspects of wanting and being able to participate in science-related contexts. The project may advantageously include instructional design and modeling, conducted in close collaboration with the teaching profession. The empirical studies shall be carried out in Swedish schools. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, applicants must have both general and specific eligibility. Eligibility must be fulfilled by the final application deadline. General eligibility for education at the doctoral level is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at the advanced level, or acquired knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country, substantially equivalent to the above. The university may grant exceptions from the requirement for general eligibility if there are special reasons (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). Decisions on exceptions are made by the Dean upon request from the department board. For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in science education, applicants must have completed teacher education with qualification to teach science within the relevant school form, including a degree project of at least 15 credits within the field of science education. Eligibility requirements can also be fulfilled by those who have acquired substantially equivalent competence within or outside the country. For specific eligibility, applicants must master either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English—that is, the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English. Any assessment of equivalence is made by the department's Research Committee, and decisions are made by the department board. Selection Applicants' ability to benefit from doctoral education is assessed based on the following criteria: Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made with regard to depth and breadth of previous education. Previous scientific production. Based on degree projects from the basic and advanced levels, as well as other written scientific production, applicants' ability to benefit from the education is assessed. The assessment also considers the extent to which applicants have demonstrated the ability to complete their previous scientific tasks within given timeframes. Furthermore, based on a comparison of scientific works, an assessment is made of the applicant's scientific development. Scientific production is assessed with regard to critical and analytical ability, independence, and creativity. Research plan. Applicants shall describe their intended research area, including problem formulation(s) and an outline of how the research work will be conducted. The plan is assessed with regard to relevance, scientific quality, and feasibility within the given timeframe. Collaboration ability. Applicants' ability to collaborate is assessed based on references, certificates, or interviews. The ability to express oneself orally and in writing in Swedish is a requirement. The ability to express oneself orally and in writing in English is an advantage. It is particularly advantageous if the applicant holds a primary teacher degree with a focus on science in grades 4–6 or a subject teacher degree in science subjects. Assessment will be made with regard to available supervisor expertise. Work samples may be performed in connection with interviews to demonstrate abilities relevant to doctoral education. About the Employment We offer a time-limited position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD student, you shall primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research, and administration in limited scope (maximum 20%). A new position as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment is thereafter renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
