Project Description Graduate Research Subject: Electrical and Systems Engineering The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) and addresses fundamental questions in quantum information science, with applications in quantum communication, quantum computing, and other forms of quantum information processing. The overarching goal is to establish the ultimate limits on what resources are required and what performance can be achieved in such tasks, as well as to develop explicit protocols that achieve or approach these limits. A central challenge is to express these limits in mathematically tractable and computationally accessible forms. Ideas and methods from quantum Shannon theory will be particularly useful, together with tools from entanglement theory and the broader mathematical foundations of quantum information. The project will investigate fundamental information-theoretic quantities, including entropy, mutual information, channel capacities, and various measures of entanglement, as well as how these behave when quantum systems or information processing resources are combined. Questions about additivity and non-additivity form an important part of this broader research program. Advisor: Professor Mikael Skoglund Admission Requirements To be admitted to graduate studies (Ch. 7 39 § Higher Education Ordinance), applicants must have basic eligibility: Completed a degree at the advanced level, or Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or Acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. Applicants must demonstrate excellent mathematical knowledge relevant to information theory, particularly in linear algebra and probability theory. In addition to the above, there is a mandatory requirement in English equivalent to English B/6. Selection To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. Previous experience in quantum information theory is meritorious. Following the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities. Target Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Information on Admission and Employment Only those admitted to graduate studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total length of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time graduate education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks such as teaching and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, and may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies to be concluded with a Licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time graduate education for two years.
