The department conducts education and research in industrial economics, industrial design, and mechanical engineering. A common starting point for the work is to develop knowledge about industrial systems, organizations, processes, flows, and products with consideration for social, economic, and ecological sustainability. The department has a strong connection to the surrounding society, and students, teachers, and researchers work in close collaboration with industry and authorities. Duties As a PhD student in Industrial Economics, you will spend the majority of your working time conducting doctoral studies, which includes writing a scientific dissertation with accompanying scientific articles equivalent to 180 credits and completing courses of at least 60 credits. The PhD position may also include teaching and administrative work comprising at most 20% of full-time work. Such service extends the study period correspondingly. The focus of the doctoral studies is decision support for initiating production relocation. The research is conducted within the research project Initiating Production Relocation: Interplay Between Different Analytical Levels, financed by the KK Foundation. The project studies how manufacturing companies initiate decisions to move production. The focus is on the interplay between the macro level (global and national conditions), the meso level (regional networks and ecosystems), and the micro level (corporate resources and management decisions). Through close collaboration with industry, new knowledge, models, and decision support tools are developed to help companies identify early signals and make more proactive and sustainable location decisions in a changing environment. Qualifications To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Sections 39-40 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: Completed a master's degree in Industrial Economics or another field that the employer considers equivalent, Fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at an advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge, Good knowledge of English in speech and writing, Good knowledge of Swedish is an asset. To succeed with your doctoral studies at University of Gävle, you need to be goal-oriented in your work. You should also: Independently drive your work forward, Be able to collaborate with others, Have a professional approach, Analyze and work with complex issues, Have the ability to discuss and explain research to people who are not active in your own field. Admission and Assessment Criteria To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must be assessed as having the ability to benefit from the education (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 35). Admission is based on individual evaluation. The total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (at most 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, teaching and administration. A new PhD position is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time.
