Doctoral Candidate in Mining and Rock Engineering with a focus on underground hydrogen storage Are you ready to take the next step in your academic journey? As a doctoral candidate with us, you will work closely with leading researchers in a strong and international research environment, with access to advanced laboratory equipment and excellent funding opportunities. You will be offered secure employment, high-quality supervision, and room to grow, both as a researcher and as a person. Luleå University of Technology is launching an interdisciplinary research project together with the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) and several Swedish industrial partners on natural hydrogen resources and underground hydrogen storage. We are seeking a motivated doctoral candidate in Mining and Rock Engineering who wants to contribute to interdisciplinary research in rock engineering, geophysics, geology, and energy systems. The project offers a unique opportunity to work together with leading researchers and industrial partners while contributing to solving one of the central technical challenges of the energy transition. As a doctoral candidate at Luleå University of Technology, you will receive qualified supervision, access to advanced research infrastructure, and excellent opportunities to develop into an internationally recognized researcher. Field Description Mining and Rock Engineering encompasses mining engineering, rock engineering, and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, tunnel construction technology, design and dimensioning of mines and rock facilities, and planning and production processes related to both mining operations and infrastructure development. Project Description For this doctoral position in Mining and Rock Engineering, the research will focus on developing engineered underground hydrogen storage in lined rock caverns (LRC) constructed in hard crystalline rock. The research includes: - developing coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical models to simulate injection, storage, and extraction of hydrogen; - evaluating how operational loads affect the integrity of steel liners, concrete, and surrounding rock; - developing reference designs for lined rock caverns with various storage capacities and scaling methods; - assessing site-specific performance under different geological conditions and providing recommendations for the design of future demonstration projects. The project is carried out in close collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), and several Swedish industrial partners. The hired doctoral candidate will work closely with researchers specializing in rock mechanics, underground construction, geophysics, and geology, and will have regular contact with industrial stakeholders. Duties As a doctoral candidate you will: - conduct independent research through numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and field investigations; - participate in site investigations and data collection in northern Sweden; - develop methods for evaluating suitable storage sites and optimizing the design of lined rock caverns; - publish research results in leading international scientific journals; - present research at national and international conferences; - complete the research education courses required for a doctoral degree. The majority of your working time will be devoted to research education. Depending on the department's needs, you may also have the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and supervision. You will become a member of the Network of Young Scientists (NYS) within CH2ESS, which organizes workshops, field excursions, interdisciplinary networking activities, and professional development activities. Qualifications For eligibility, a master's degree or equivalent is required in one of the following areas: - Rock Mechanics - Civil Engineering (with a focus on geotechnical engineering or underground construction) - Mining Engineering - Strength of Materials - Other related fields. Good knowledge of numerical modeling of rock and underground structures is required. Experience with finite element, finite difference, or discrete element methods (for example FLAC3D, 3DEC, Abaqus, COMSOL, or similar software) is advantageous. You should have: - strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills; - a strong interest in scientific research; - the ability to work both independently and together with others in interdisciplinary teams; - very good ability to communicate in speech and writing in English. Knowledge of Swedish is advantageous as some field work, industrial contacts, and teaching activities may require communication in Swedish, but Swedish is not a mandatory requirement.
