About the Position The Galaxy Formation Group at the Department of Physics, Division of Astrophysics at Lund University is seeking a PhD student to work on models of galaxy formation. Research at the division encompasses galaxy formation, galactic dynamics and evolution, star formation and dynamics, stellar evolution, stellar spectroscopy and astrometry, planet formation and dynamics, and exoplanet atmospheres. Being a PhD Student As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a doctoral researcher, you will be trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using appropriate methodologies, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and strengthen your pedagogical abilities. For more information about being a PhD student at the Faculty of Science, see naturvetenskap.se. Subject and Project Description We are seeking a PhD student in the field of theoretical astrophysics. The doctoral researcher will work on analyzing and developing supercomputer simulations and models of galaxy evolution. These will be used to interpret data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) planned satellite ARRAKIHS. You will be enrolled in the PhD program in Physics, see General Study Plan for Doctoral Education. Responsibilities You will primarily focus on your doctoral research, which largely consists of writing a doctoral dissertation. Additionally, you are expected to: - Conduct research within your field of study - Publish results in high-quality journals - Participate in project meetings at LU and SU, as well as within the ARRAKIHS consortium - Present results at national and international conferences Besides your studies, a maximum of 20% of your working time may be devoted to teaching and other institutional work. Qualifications To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below. Eligibility Requirements You meet the basic eligibility requirements for doctoral education if you have: - completed a degree at the advanced level, or - completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the advanced level, or - acquired equivalent knowledge through other means. Specific eligibility for doctoral education in astronomy and astrophysics requires that your basic university education include physics, mathematics, and/or equivalent technology as essential components. Beyond 60 higher education credits in fundamental physics subjects, the specific eligibility requirements include at least 60 credits in courses of immediate relevance to astronomy and astrophysics. These may be courses in astronomy or other physics subjects, or in technological subjects (such as space or control engineering). Of these 120 credits, at least 60 must be at the advanced level. The fundamental courses must include a degree project of at least 30 credits. Specific eligibility may also be obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed on a case-by-case basis. To facilitate interdisciplinary initiatives and significant specialization in certain areas, qualifications other than your subject-specific competence in physics may be considered.
