Description of the Activity You will be enrolled at the Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research, and will be actively involved in the operation of the MicroMAX beamline within the RÅC-funded project MIRA. The Division of Synchrotron Radiation Physics (http://www.sljus.lu.se) is part of the Department of Physics and has more than 40 employees. The research focus is on experimental studies of electronic, structural, and chemical properties of materials. At the division, we use and develop a broad range of synchrotron and laboratory-based techniques. We are also involved in developing beamlines, experimental stations, experimental techniques, and accelerator systems for MAX IV Laboratory, and maintain close collaboration with the European Spallation Source (www.esss.se), a new European neutron facility under construction adjacent to MAX IV. MAX IV is a national large-scale laboratory that is part of Lund University and is located at cycling distance from the Department of Physics. The laboratory is the world's brightest synchrotron radiation facility where researchers from Sweden and around the world conduct research in materials science, biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. NanoLund (http://www.nano.lu.se), formerly known as the Nanometer Consortium, was founded in 1988 and supports and coordinates activities in nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University. NanoLund is today Sweden's largest research environment for nanoscience and engages approximately 250 PhD students and researchers across the Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Medicine at Lund University. The vision is to bring together the most creative minds in a world-leading interdisciplinary research environment to help solve society's major challenges by advancing the boundaries of nanoscience. As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the right methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and strengthen your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by advisors. Research studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree. Subject and Project Description Beam-steering ptychography is an emerging method for coherent X-ray imaging where the illuminating probe is scanned across the sample by steering the beam, rather than by mechanical movement of the sample. This decouples the scanning from sample movement and enables high-resolution quantitative 2D and 3D imaging of samples that are difficult to scan mechanically — including soft biological tissues and disease models studied in their native or near-native state. Within the RÅC-MIRA project, we are seeking a PhD student to contribute to the next phase of this development. The work will focus on refining the forward model for beam-steering ptychographic reconstruction and extending the method to 3D via (joint) ptycho-tomography and AI-assisted reconstruction methods, with the goal of improving efficiency and reducing required experimental beam time and radiation dose. The position is located at Lund University with research activities at MAX IV (MicroMAX beamline) and is embedded in close collaboration with DESY (Hamburg) and other RÅC-MIRA partners. Depending on background and interests, the work may also include experimental activities at synchrotron beamlines and contributions to instrument development. General Study Plan for Research Education Job Duties The project is primarily computational with an experimental component. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to: Develop forward models and reconstruction methods for beam-steering ptychography. Work with ptychographic tomography and AI-assisted 3D reconstruction methods. Validate algorithms with both simulated and experimental data. Contribute to the development of scientific software for large-scale imaging problems. Participate in synchrotron experiments together with project partners. Work in international research collaboration environments. Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. The main task for a PhD student is to engage in research education, which includes both participation in research projects and research education courses. Job duties may also include involvement in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time.
