The English Department provides education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels and is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The Department has approximately 35 employees. The number of registered undergraduate students is over 750.

Research Field
Among the research areas, early modern literature, 19th-century literature, modernism, 20th-century literature, narratology, and critical theory stand out, with a strong profile in postcolonial and world literature.
Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral education, applicants must have basic and specific eligibility. Eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application deadline.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in another way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
Specific eligibility is described in the general study plan for doctoral education in English.
To obtain specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in English, you must have completed, with satisfactory results, courses at advanced level of at least 30 hp in one of the main areas English with linguistics focus or English with literary studies focus (alternatively general linguistics or general literary studies) including a thesis of at least 15 hp.
For specific eligibility, the applicant must also document English language proficiency through one of the following internationally recognized language proficiency tests: TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition or TOEFL iBT Paper Edition with a minimum of 102 (and 27 in Writing); Cambridge C1 Advanced with at least B grade (and B in Writing); IELTS Academic, IELTS Online or IELTS UKVI (Academic) with a minimum of 7.5 (and 7.0 in Writing); Pearson PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online with a minimum of 76 (and 82 in Writing).

Selection among applicants is made based on the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability are:

independence
collaboration ability
ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English
available supervisor expertise.

About the Position
We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the position may include work with education, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%).
A new position as a PhD student applies for at most one year, after which the position is renewed for at most two years at a time.
