Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading expertise in several research areas. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, public actors, and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology generates revenue of over 2.3 billion SEK per year. We have more than 1,800 employees and approximately 21,600 students. PhD Student in Electric Power Engineering, ref no 4219-26 Electric Power Engineering is part of the Energy Science Division at the Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics. Within Electric Power Engineering, we maintain close collaboration with industry and authorities, both in research projects and student projects. Our research is conducted to high international standards in collaboration with researchers worldwide. In the field of power quality, the subject has strong international recognition thanks to world-leading research. Field of Study Description The research field of electric power engineering encompasses studies of the system for generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy, as well as studies of the interaction between the electrical grid, power generation, and power consumption. Project Description This project concerns the impact of voltage sags and transients on large electrical drive systems in modern facilities that supply critical processes. The project will encompass emission, propagation, and immunity: the source of the voltage sag or transient; how the event spreads from its source to the equipment terminals; and the event's impact on the equipment, facility, and process. The study will include modeling of the propagation of voltage sags and transients, of modern facilities and processes, and of modern electrical drive systems. The project is conducted in collaboration between LTU and Energiforsk. Duties A doctoral position can involve both theoretical and practical work. As a PhD student, you will receive training in scientific work through publication of scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. You will also take mandatory and elective doctoral courses. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to try your hand at teaching. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage challenging development projects. Your work will primarily consist of theoretical models and simulations, but measurements in both laboratory and field settings may also be included. Qualifications You are eligible to apply for this position if you have a master's degree (MSc) or equivalent technical degree with a focus relevant to research in electric power engineering, such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy engineering, engineering physics, or similar fields. Alternatively, a person meets the general eligibility requirements for education at the research level if they: have completed an advanced level degree, have completed higher education studies of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level, or in another way, within or outside the country, have acquired equivalent knowledge. Good knowledge of both written and spoken English is required. Previous experience in research, development work, or research-oriented education within an area relevant to the duties is considered a merit. Additionally, the ability to contribute to the group's teaching (in Swedish) is also considered a merit.
