Learn more about us at: kau.se/jobb Description The Faculty of Health, Science and Engineering is announcing a position in doctoral education leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. This recruitment is part of the DRIVE project (Data-driven latency-sensitive mobile services for a digitalized society), a research profile financed by the KK Foundation: https://www.kau.se/cs-drive. As part of DRIVE, we investigate communication systems that are secure, high-performing and with low latency in close collaboration with our partner company Mullvad VPN. The PhD student will conduct research on optimized performance and reduced latency for communication systems based on the VPN protocol WireGuard and the anonymity network Tor, with a focus on end users connected via next-generation mobile and non-terrestrial networks. The research should be empirically grounded in internet measurements and leverage the testbeds, partner companies and services provided by DRIVE and associated national and international projects. Work at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers from the Privacy and Security (PriSec) and Distributed Intelligent Systems and Communications (DISCO) research groups. Responsibilities As a PhD student, you will primarily pursue your own doctoral research. Doctoral education, which consists of 240 credit points (hp) for a PhD and 120 hp for a Licentiate degree, is an opportunity to study with a salary combined with work and the chance to begin an academic career. As a PhD student, you work independently and are prepared to contribute in various ways to the subject and the department's work and development. You will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in your areas of interest, together with others. It may, by agreement, be relevant to participate in teaching and administration, known as institutional duties. Such work may comprise a maximum of 20% of full-time work. Work as a PhD student gives you great freedom to plan and organize your work, which, among other things, requires commitment, drive and the ability to structure your work in order to successfully complete a dissertation. To contribute to a good work environment and support both the organization's and your own development as a researcher, you are present on campus at Karlstad University and actively participate in daily work and the academic community. Conditions Following admission to doctoral education, an employment as a PhD student will be offered (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5 Section 3). The employment comprises four years of full-time studies with only research. If teaching or other institutional duties become relevant, the employment will be extended by the corresponding time, up to a maximum of five years full-time. The employment is time-limited for the first year and can thereafter be extended for at most two years at a time (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 Section 7), with start date by agreement. The salary for the PhD student position follows a local collective agreement with fixed salary steps.
