Job Responsibilities
Job responsibilities consist of research, teaching, course development, supervision, and examination at various levels in linguistics, primarily within computational linguistics, but also other appropriate teaching within the department's existing course offerings. The offerings include courses in computer systems, programming and machine learning, speech analysis, mathematics, statistics, corpus linguistics, language technology, thesis and project work, semantics, and an introductory course in linguistics. Computational linguistics courses are offered at the bachelor's and master's levels. The work as assistant professor also includes participating in scientific, pedagogical, and administrative development work as well as actively participating in the department's research environment and conducting independent research.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible for employment as an assistant professor in computational linguistics is someone who has completed a relevant doctoral degree (e.g., in linguistics, computational linguistics, language technology, or computer science), or holds a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, has documented scientific expertise in computational linguistics, machine learning, and large language models (LLM), and has documented teaching ability. As a general eligibility requirement, applicants must have both the ability to collaborate and the ability and suitability otherwise needed to perform the job responsibilities well.
Selection Criteria
When selecting among eligible applicants, equal and special weight will be given to pedagogical and scientific ability in linguistics with a focus on computational linguistics, machine learning, and large language models. Great weight will also be given to the breadth of these competencies. The breadth of pedagogical ability refers to the ability to teach the subjects in the department's course offerings. The breadth of scientific ability refers to the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research projects, in line with other research conducted at the department.
Stockholm University will primarily consider applicants who, after a comprehensive assessment of competence, qualifications, ability, and personal skills, have the best prerequisites for performing the current job responsibilities and contributing to positive development of the operations.
Particularly meritorious are the following:
documented ability to teach a course offering relevant to the department,
experience in seeking and obtaining external research funding,
experience in research and teaching in language technology and machine learning including large language models.
Meritorious are the following:
ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to communicate about research and development work,
documented ability for interdisciplinary collaboration, preferably in one of the areas where research is conducted at the department,
supervision at the research level,
documented administrative ability,
skills in Swedish (or Norwegian or Danish) as required for collaboration within the department, faculty, university, and society at large in accordance with the description above of primary job responsibilities.
Higher Education Pedagogical Education
Meritorious is higher education pedagogical education of at least 15 higher education credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways. Participation in research supervisor training is also meritorious.
