The Swedish Defence University is an internationally leading academic institution within defense, crisis management, and security. The Swedish Defence University educates Sweden's officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law with a focus on operational law and international humanitarian law, defense systems, military science, leadership and management, military history, and political science. We are now seeking a temporary adjunct with placement at the Department of Operational Law and International Humanitarian Law in Stockholm. Description of the Subject Area At the Department of Operational Law and International Humanitarian Law (IOF), approximately 18 employees currently work conducting research and teaching in law with a focus on operational law and international humanitarian law, which is the scientific discipline focusing on international and national regulations for defense, crisis management, and security. Education and research cover international humanitarian law rules concerning, among other things, the right to use military force (ius ad bellum), international humanitarian law aspects of international peace operations, the laws of war (ius in bello), human rights in armed conflict, peace operations and other crisis situations, as well as accountability issues in international military operations at various conflict levels and contexts. In national law, our activities relate to legal aspects of civil preparedness and total defense. We focus primarily on public law, particularly constitutional law and administrative law addressing regulations for crisis, war, and threat of war, enabling legislation, and legislation governing military and civilian defense operations in peace, crisis, and war. We often work comparatively and explore Swedish implementation of international humanitarian law rules in our areas. We work in both international and national law on issues such as compliance with the laws of war and rule of law principles, regulations of high-technology warfare, security protection, intelligence matters, cybersecurity, and cyber defense. Duties As an adjunct, your main work task will be teaching operational law and international humanitarian law on military programs and civilian courses at the basic level. You will also work with commissioned education and analysis assignments directed toward government agencies, municipalities, regions, and companies with tasks in civil preparedness and total defense. Administrative tasks are part of your responsibilities. Who We Are Looking For We are looking for you who have: • A bachelor's degree in law. • Experience from at least one of the following areas: - Teaching - Service as an officer or reserve officer - Work as a civilian employee at the Swedish Armed Forces - Professional teaching in operational law - Work at government agencies in the security sector - Work at the Office of the Prime Minister or NATO - Participation in international military, police, or civilian operations We are also looking for those who are early in their careers. English is our primary working language, and therefore it is necessary that you are able to work in both English and Swedish in teaching and other work tasks. Meritorious Qualifications It is meritorious if you have knowledge of and experience working within the civil preparedness system and total defense organizations, as well as a good understanding of the legislation governing their activities. We also view favorably experience working and teaching in international and national law with a focus on military and/or civilian operations, as well as experience in administrative work at a college or university. Furthermore, experience in planning and conducting war games from an operational law perspective is meritorious, both in design and implementation. About the Position This is a full-time temporary position through September 2027, with start as soon as possible. An employment at the Swedish Defence University may involve a security clearance for placement in a security class, which involves record checks and in certain cases security interviews with the Security Police. The position may include war placement. If you are already on war placement in your current employment at an agency and your expertise is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant agency and the Swedish Defence University regarding your placement.
