2 PhD Students in Environmental Analysis of Catastrophic Failure Processes in Geomaterials
Popis:
ERC PhD Students in Environmental Analysis with Focus on Catastrophic Failure Processes in Geomaterials (2 positions) Would you like to work on groundbreaking research as part of an ERC-funded project, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international research environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure and beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a PhD student at Uppsala University. The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in Earth Sciences. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal issues. For more information see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper The successful candidates for this position will be employed in the program Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL) at the Department of Earth Sciences. The research will be conducted within the framework of an ERC Consolidator Grant project (FORECAST) at Uppsala University with a focus on developing next-generation prediction science for natural hazards through an interdisciplinary framework that integrates geomechanics, geophysics, statistical physics, and computational modeling. The project encompasses a broad spectrum of natural hazards, including landslides, rockbursts, glacier instabilities, and volcanic eruptions, with the goal of improving our ability to diagnose and forecast catastrophic failure processes in complex geophysical systems. PhD students will be part of a dynamic international research environment and collaborate with leading researchers and international partners in forecasting and risk management of geo-hazards. For more information on the ERC project FORECAST, see: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101232311. What we offer Prestigious ERC funding – Become part of a well-funded ERC Consolidator Grant with a long-term and ambitious research vision. Groundbreaking research – Work on next-generation prediction science for catastrophic natural hazards. Interdisciplinary research environment – Collaborate across the boundaries of geomechanics, geophysics, statistical physics, and data science. International network – Collaborate with leading researchers and international partners. Scientific creativity – Develop and explore your own ideas in a dynamic and supportive research environment. Career development – Receive mentorship in scientific publishing, grant writing, and academic career development. Cutting-edge doctoral training – Build advanced competence in computational modeling, scientific programming, and natural hazard forecasting. Excellent working conditions – Take advantage of advanced research infrastructure, including high-performance computing resources, and the high quality of life offered by Uppsala University and the city of Uppsala. Job responsibilities The PhD projects will focus on developing physics-based numerical models for simulating progressive to catastrophic failure processes in geomaterials at field scale. The research aims to improve understanding, diagnosis, and forecasting of geo-hazard phenomena. Two PhD positions are advertised: one with primary focus on landslides and the other on rockbursts. The projects will combine theoretical modeling, statistical physics, numerical simulations, and analysis of monitoring data to investigate the mechanisms behind failure precursors, instability development, and predictability in geophysical systems. Qualification requirements Eligible for doctoral level education is someone who has a master's degree (second cycle) in geomechanics, geophysics, engineering geology, geotechnics, applied mathematics, physics, or a comparable field relevant to the project, completed at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 credits, or by some other means acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. The successful candidate should have a strong foundation in mathematics, mechanics, and physics, as well as knowledge of computer simulation and scientific programming. Desirable/meriting qualifications Previous experience with numerical and/or mathematical modeling is a merit. Previous experience with scientific publishing is also a merit. Provisions for PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and in the University's rules and guidelines. About the employment 2 positions. The employment is fixed-term, according to HE Chapter 5 § 7. The position is 100%. Start date February 1, 2027 or by agreement. Work location: Uppsala. Information about the employment is provided by: Qinghua Lei ([email protected]) The application should include CV, copies of relevant diplomas and grades, master's thesis, and other relevant documents, including contact information for two referees.
