U-PRINT is one of Uppsala University's infrastructure facilities for additive manufacturing for life science research. We operate at the intersection of technology and biology, supporting researchers, healthcare and industry partners by transforming ideas into functional experimental tools, prototypes and custom-built systems. We are now seeking a Senior Research Engineer who can take responsibility for complex technical projects and contribute to both technical and operational development of the infrastructure. You will work with the core operations of U-PRINT, where practical engineering work is combined with responsibility for project delivery and infrastructure operations. The role suits someone comfortable working independently within technical, collaborative and administrative areas. Responsibilities Translate user needs into technical specifications, CAD models and functional prototypes Design and manufacture custom laboratory tools including molds, microfluidic components, imaging accessories and automation systems Work hands-on with AM technologies, including SLA/DLP, SLS, MJF, FDM and associated post-processing and optimization Support projects from concept through prototyping, testing and implementation Develop or integrate electronics, sensors and software-controlled installations Advise users on design and material choices The role involves leading multiple parallel projects and having direct contact with researchers and external partners, as well as operations and development of the research infrastructure, including: Managing facility projects, documentation, user support and service workflows Preparing quotes and managing billing for internal and external users Supporting procurement, supplier contact and equipment/service acquisition Maintaining SOPs, risk assessments and quality documentation Improving workflows, service structures and infrastructure practices Oversight of laboratory operations, safety procedures, chemical waste management and inventory Participation in lectures, workshops, demonstrations and promotional events Qualifications We seek a technically strong and practically oriented engineer with experience in advanced prototyping for life science applications. You have: PhD in additive manufacturing, engineering, materials science or related field Practical experience with multiple AM technologies, such as SLA/DLP, SLS, MJF or FDM Strong 3D modeling, 3D printing software, CAD and Design-for-AM skills Relevant scientific publications, patents or industrial collaborations Documented experience translating user needs into prototypes or technical solutions Programming/scripting skills, e.g. Python, for design, automation and/or data handling Experience with electronics, sensors and/or software control of laboratory instrumentation Experience working in interdisciplinary environments Good ability to express yourself in spoken and written English Meritorious The following are considered particularly advantageous: Experience with research infrastructure, core facilities or multi-technology AM environments Experience with facility management, project tracking, billing or service documentation systems Experience with quotes, cost estimation, billing or procurement workflows Advanced CAD skills and experience with parametric/generative design, simulation, mesh optimization or hard-surface modeling Experience with life science or biomedical applications, e.g. drug delivery systems Experience with material characterization techniques Experience with automation, IoT or data-driven workflows About the Position The employment is permanent.
