Mother Tongue Teacher in Amharic

Description:

Description Would you like to make a difference in students' learning, language development, and identity formation? Language is humanity's primary tool for thinking, communicating, and learning. Through language, we develop our identity, express thoughts and feelings, and understand others. For multilingual students, their mother tongue is an important key to both knowledge development and learning security. According to the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket), mother tongue instruction strengthens students' opportunities to achieve school goals by developing both their mother tongue and Swedish. We are now recruiting a mother tongue teacher in Amharic to Karlstad Municipality! The position is placed at the mother tongue unit, where we organize mother tongue instruction and study guidance in approximately 35 languages within primary and secondary schools. You will become part of an engaged and competent work group with approximately 45 colleagues who together work to provide students with the best possible conditions to succeed. Job Responsibilities As a mother tongue teacher, you are responsible for planning, implementing, and following up on mother tongue instruction and/or study guidance in Amharic for students in the municipality's primary and secondary schools. You create high-quality instruction where students' linguistic and knowledge development are in focus, and you actively work to create an inclusive and safe learning environment. Your duties include stimulating students' interest in language and culture and strengthening their multilingual identity. By adapting instruction to students' needs and conditions, you contribute to their goal attainment in various subjects. You plan and structure your instruction independently and use digital tools as a natural part of both instruction, documentation, and follow-up. You are also expected to continuously monitor students' development and provide feedback that supports their learning. As a mother tongue teacher, you have an important role in collaboration with the school's other staff. You cooperate with classroom teachers, subject teachers, and student support services to create good conditions for students' learning and participation. Instruction is held at multiple schools within Karlstad Municipality and can also be conducted through distance learning, which requires flexibility and a good ability to plan and organize your work. Qualifications We are looking for someone with a teaching degree or other relevant academic degree with a pedagogical focus and good knowledge of school curricula. You have Amharic as your mother tongue and very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written. It is meritorious if you have teacher certification with qualification in mother tongue, additional education in language or pedagogy, and experience with mother tongue instruction, study guidance, or similar assignments. According to Skolverket, instruction should primarily be conducted by certified and qualified teachers. If certification is lacking, employment may still be considered, provided that you have the right competence and are deemed suitable for the assignment. Working in schools also requires good knowledge of the Swedish language equivalent to at least level C1, as language is a central part of the assignment. As a person, you are responsible and independent in your professional role. You have a pedagogical and flexible work approach, are solution-focused, and open to developing new methods. You feel confident using digital tools as support in instruction. You have good collaboration skills and contribute to a positive work environment. Your instruction is characterized by quality, clarity, and a strong focus on students' development. You adapt instruction based on students' different needs and create a safe and inclusive learning environment. The positions are filled subject to required decisions being made.
